Umahi: Tinubu Using Road Infrastructure to Tackle Insecurity, Hunger and Boost Economy
The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has declared that the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are producing positive results, with strategic road infrastructure projects contributing to economic growth, improved security, increased agricultural activities and better connectivity across the country.
Umahi made the remarks on Tuesday during the official flag-off of the reconstruction of the 122-kilometre Kaduna (Mando)–Birnin Gwari Road at the Afaka Mando Arena in Kaduna State.
According to the minister, the project fulfils another campaign promise made by President Tinubu and represents a major milestone in the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at strengthening regional connectivity, expanding commerce and creating economic opportunities.
He said the Federal Government is deploying road infrastructure as a tool to address economic challenges, combat insecurity, reduce hunger and bridge developmental gaps in states that had previously received limited federal road projects.
Umahi explained that the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road would provide a shorter route linking Northern Nigeria to Lagos through Niger, Kwara, Osun and Oyo states, thereby reducing travel time and enhancing the movement of goods and people.
He also noted that the reconstruction of the Abuja–Kaduna Highway has significantly improved security along the corridor, stating that frequent attacks that once discouraged travellers have greatly reduced.
Responding to criticisms that the Federal Government is prioritising new road projects while neglecting existing ones, Umahi dismissed the claims, listing several ongoing rehabilitation projects, including the Sokoto–Zamfara–Funtua–Zaria Road, Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, Makurdi–9th Mile Road, Bodo–Bonny Road and the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Highway.
The minister stressed that road infrastructure remains a catalyst for national development, noting that improved road networks stimulate agriculture, commerce, education and economic productivity while reducing insecurity.
Umahi also congratulated Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, on securing presidential approval for a 50-kilometre intra-city light rail project valued at 868 million dollars, describing the development as a major achievement for the state.
He further urged Nigerians to engage in constructive criticism that would help government improve governance and service delivery rather than resorting to insults or misinformation.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the ceremony, Governor Uba Sani reaffirmed the President’s commitment to the people of Birnin Gwari, recalling that Tinubu visited the community before assuming office despite its security challenges and pledged to reconstruct the road and restore peace.
The governor said the commencement of the project demonstrates that President Tinubu honours his promises, adding that the administration has shown unprecedented commitment to the development of Northern Nigeria.
Also speaking, the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Alhaji (Dr.) Zubairu Jibril Maigwari II, commended President Tinubu and the governors of the affected states for the progress made in tackling insecurity, noting that many farmers have returned to their farmlands after years of displacement and fear.
