Corruption Knows No Borders, Xinhua Tells ICPC as Both Institutions Consider Media Partnership
China’s Xinhua News Agency has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to promote Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts internationally.
The agency’s Deputy President for Africa, Mr. Gui Tao, stated this during a meeting with the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, and other officials of the Commission at its headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting, held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, centred on establishing a strategic media partnership to facilitate news sharing, information exchange and cooperation in public communication.
Gui described accurate and balanced reporting as essential to fostering international cooperation, emphasising that corruption was a transnational challenge that required coordinated efforts across borders.
He said Xinhua was prepared to use its extensive global media network to project the ICPC’s activities and Nigeria’s anti-corruption reforms to a wider international audience.
The Chinese media delegation also expressed willingness to provide technical assistance and professional training to strengthen the communication capabilities of ICPC personnel.
Welcoming the delegation, Aliyu said the proposed collaboration would create opportunities to deepen relations between Nigeria and China while supporting efforts to combat corruption.
He identified illicit financial flows and the cross-border movement of proceeds of crime as areas requiring stronger international cooperation.
The ICPC chairman further noted that the media had an important responsibility to shape public opinion, promote accountability and mobilise citizens against corrupt practices.
He therefore called on Xinhua to support the Commission’s Media and Public Communication Unit through technology transfer and professional capacity-building programmes.
Aliyu said the support would improve the Commission’s information dissemination and strengthen its ability to communicate its activities to audiences within and outside Nigeria.
Gui reiterated that Xinhua’s international platform could help highlight Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives and achievements, adding that both institutions shared common interests in promoting integrity and public accountability.
The proposed partnership is expected to strengthen media relations between the two organisations, increase the ICPC’s international visibility and promote cooperation between Nigeria and China in the areas of anti-corruption, governance and the rule of law.
