Force PRO Highlights Police Reforms, Announces Media Parley with Zone 7
The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to strengthen its Complaint Response Unit (CRU) as part of ongoing efforts to improve accountability, transparency, and public confidence in policing across the country.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Iniedu, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, on Friday. He called for stronger collaboration with the media to enhance public awareness and ensure accurate reporting of the Force’s reform initiatives.
Describing the visit as part of his familiarization tour, CSP Iniedu said the CRU remains the Nigeria Police Force’s primary internal accountability platform, operating round the clock to receive, track, and resolve complaints from members of the public. The unit handles allegations of professional misconduct, extortion, harassment, and human rights violations involving police personnel nationwide.
According to him, ongoing upgrades to the CRU are aimed at reducing response times, improving complaint tracking, and increasing transparency in the handling of reported cases. He noted that the reforms are in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police to build a more accountable and service-oriented Police Force.
The Force PRO also announced plans to organize a media parley with Zone 7 Police Command to strengthen engagement between the Police and journalists. He encouraged media practitioners to participate actively, saying improved understanding of police operations would promote balanced and factual reporting.
“Journalists are part of the police family,” CSP Edem said, adding that responsible journalism plays a vital role in promoting transparency, accountability, and public trust while supporting ongoing reforms within the Force.
Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to working closely with the Nigeria Police Force.
She commended CSP Iniedu for his open and collaborative approach, assuring him that journalists would continue to amplify citizens’ concerns and provide adequate coverage of developments surrounding the Complaint Response Unit to promote accountability.
The strengthened CRU is expected to enhance public access to police complaint mechanisms while reinforcing the media’s role in promoting transparency and ensuring that reported cases receive proper attention and follow-up.
