Take Ownership of Your Projects, Umahi Tells Federal Controllers

…..Minister urges continuous learning, regular site visits and passion for quality delivery
The Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, CON, has charged Federal Controllers of Works across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to put the interests of Nigerians first and take full ownership of projects under their supervision.
Umahi gave the charge on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, during the Ministry’s monthly meeting with Federal Controllers of Works at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.
The meeting provides a regular platform for reviewing the progress of federal road projects, addressing challenges and strengthening supervision, accountability and effective project delivery across the country.
The Minister urged the Controllers to take a keen interest in construction and make continuous learning a priority, stressing that effective supervision requires both professional knowledge and practical understanding of construction activities.
“Take interest in the construction. Read your books to improve. I learn a lot from the site, not from the office,” Umahi said.
He encouraged the Controllers to spend more time on project sites, understand the realities of construction and maintain close contact with communities and Nigerians directly affected by federal projects.
Umahi also emphasised the importance of passion and commitment in public service, saying genuine concern for the people would inspire public officers to achieve more.
“When you have passion for the people, you put God first. God will make you do more things you don’t even know how to do,” he said.
Reflecting on his experience as Governor of Ebonyi State, the Minister said his achievements in office were driven by faith, commitment to the people and a strong sense of responsibility.
“When I was Governor, God gave me the revelation that I had the ability to do so many things. That was God’s direction,” he recalled.
Umahi told the Controllers that putting Nigerians at the centre of their responsibilities was also a way of putting God first, adding that genuine dedication to public service brings fulfilment and lasting benefits.
“When you put the people first, you are putting God first. You will enjoy your job. You will be happy with the job. As you are putting God and the people first, you are creating everlasting blessing for your family,” the Minister added.
He urged the Controllers to remain diligent, proactive and committed to their duties, stressing that the success of federal road projects should ultimately be measured by their quality and the positive impact they have on the lives of Nigerians.
